Voice AI agents: what they cost and where they fail

AI voice agent handling phone calls with a call dashboard

Short answer: an AI voice agent is billed per minute of conversation, plus telephony, and is limited by how many calls it can handle at the same time. Before launching, check per-minute cost, concurrency, call recording consent and local telemarketing rules.

What you pay for

A voice AI call usually combines several costs: the voice platform, the language model, text-to-speech and the phone network. Platforms such as Retell AI publish per-minute pricing that changes with the model and voice you choose, so always price a test agent with your real settings rather than the headline rate.

When quoting a client, remember that the platform rate is your cost. Your price needs to cover telephony, monitoring, the dashboard or CRM integration, and your margin.

How many calls can run at once?

Concurrency is the number of live calls an account can handle simultaneously. As an example, Retell's documentation states that pay-as-you-go workspaces include 20 concurrent calls, with additional concurrency available for a monthly fee per call and a burst mode for short spikes (Retell concurrency docs). Your telephony provider may have its own limit too — the lower of the two is your real ceiling.

Calling other countries

Many platforms sell US or Canadian numbers that can still call selected countries at international rates (Retell international calling). For campaigns in India, a local number through an Indian telephony provider usually builds more trust than a foreign caller ID.

Where voice agents fail

  • Expired recordings: some platforms provide recording links that expire. If your dashboard stores only the link, the recording disappears later — copy the file to your own storage.
  • Names and numbers: speech recognition mishears names, addresses and alphanumeric codes. Confirm critical details back to the caller.
  • Languages: quality varies by language and accent. Test with real callers in every language you plan to support.
  • Silent failures: if the webhook that saves call data fails, nobody notices unless you have alerts.

Compliance checklist

  • Tell callers the call is recorded — many jurisdictions require consent.
  • For promotional calls in India, follow TRAI telemarketing rules, including registered numbers and Do-Not-Disturb checks.
  • Decide how long recordings and transcripts are kept, and who can access them.

Prices and limits change often — check the provider's current documentation before you quote or launch.
